Congratulations to Amro Zayed for being awarded funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for a research apiary to study honeybee behaviour, genetics and health. The funding will support Zayed by enhancing the capacity to experiment on honeybee colonies to support cutting-edge research on the genetics and health of these important pollinators. The research will lead to better understanding of honeybees and their role in supporting food security and sustainability.

Big congrats to MSc Student KC Galang for winning the Entomological Society of Canada’s President Prize for best student talk in the area of Social Insects, for her talk titled “The molecular basis of altruistic and selfish aggression in honey bees”
Congrats KC!
Congrats to Nadia Tsvetkov (PhD candidate) for wining the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists Student Merit Award. The Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists Student Merit Award was established to recognize outstanding achievement by a student in the field of apiculture.
Congrats to PhD candidates Katie and Dova for being awarded Ontario Graduate Scholarships from the Province of Ontario. Well deserved!
I am so happy to announce that zayedlab alum Dr. Brock Harpur won the 2017 George C. Eickwort award from the North American Section of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects… wow! this is a huge deal.
The late and great Dr. George C. Eickwort was a giant in the field – please read more about his illustrious life here. My PhD supervisor (Dr. Laurence Packer) was a colleague of Dr. Eickwort, and it was always fun listening to Laurence speak about George and the Eickwortian Legends! [my favourite story is the one where Laurence, George and I think Dr. Bill Wcislo were digging up sweat bee nests in the desert and broke the water lines to the Biosphere2]
The Eickwort award is annually given to a PhD student or recent graduate that “shows the most distinguished record of research and scholarly activity in the area of social insect biology.” Needless to say, given the amazing amount of talented social insect biologists in North America, this award is super competitive. Brock Harpur did his MSc and his PhD in the lab, and we are all just super thrilled to seem him win this award.
Congrats Brock! Amazing achievement!
Congrats to MSc Student Harshil Patel for wining best ‘lighting’ talk at the OE3C meeting hosted by Queens University last weekend. Harshil presented on his BeeOmics research that strives to map out the genetics of hygienic behaviour and overwintering mortality in honey bees.
Congrats H

I was very honoured to receive the President’s Emerging Research Leadership Award as YorkU’s research gala last week.

Also got to celebrate some great achievements by colleagues from the Department of Biology and Faculty of Science.

I am very happy to report that I was awarded the Entomological Society of Canada’s Gordon C. Hewitt Award; awarded to researchers who have made an outstanding contribution to entomology in Canada within 12 years of their PhD [read the full citation in the September 2016 bulletin of the Society]. Charles Gordon Hewitt was an amazing Canadian entomologist and conservation biologist. His short and illustrious career included serving as Canada’s Dominion Entomologist, drafting Canada’s destructive insect and pest act in 1910, and aiding in the protection of Canada’s wildlife. More info on his career can be found on his wiki page.
I received the award during the recent International Congress of Entomology, held at Orlando Florida. It was a very special experience. Thank you ESC!

Very happy that Erica Shenfeld, who carried out her honours thesis research on Bee Genetics, won the Department of Biology’s C.W. Fowle and B. Rozario prize, as well as the Mainguy Genetics Award.
The Fowel and Rozario prize is awarded to the most outstanding graduating student in Honours Biology as determined by the department. The award is based on grades, research potential and leadership activities within the department.
The Mainguy Genetics award is given to a 3rd or 4th year biology students who show extreme proficiency in Genetics, both in the laboratory and in the classroom.
Congrats Erica … you made us very proud!

May is a very fun time of the year. Spring is in full swing and the bees are happy. It is also a time when a fresh cohort of YorkU undergrads join the lab. This year we have two new summer NSERC USRA scholarship winners joining the lab, Danny and Pratik. We also have zayedlab veterans Harshil (research assistant, summer 2014, and Honors thesis 2014/15) and Research at York student Sani (bioinformatics research assistant) who will continue to work with us this summer.
Welcome and hoping for a very productive summer.
